The Importance of Volunteer Contributions to Community Lutheran Church.
Total Number of Volunteers Needed for Our Ministries: Approximately 460
Total Number of Hours that Represent the Ministry Work: Approximately 11,450
Monetary Value of Volunteer Hours at $10 per hour: $114,500.00
Some of these volunteers may put in 30 minutes per year; others 30 hours. But all of them make our worship and our church special.
With more hands and more volunteers, we can accomplish an even wider reaching mission. Look at some of the many opportunities for service below and get involved! You'll be glad you did!
Assistant Ministers participate in the service assisting the Pastor with the actual service. Assistant Ministers take part of the liturgy and lead the congregation in prayers and other participatory sections. Assistant Ministers assist with communion, baptism, liturgy and special events. Assistant Ministers also help the youth volunteer acolytes and crucifers throughout the service.
To be an Assistant Minister, you must be willing to lead the congregation through Sunday morning worship activities and as congregational leaders. Regular and faithful attendance is a must for any Christian wishing a deeper relationship with Christ but is particularly important for Assistant Ministers. You do not need to be able to sing to be an Assistant Minister. Training is provided! This opportunity is open to all confirmed members.
Lectors are the lay people who read the lessons each Sunday morning. The lectors are assigned a Sunday and the lessons are mailed to them in advance. Although it is not necessary, public speaking experience is helpful. This opportunity is open to all confirmed members.
Altar Guild members prepare the altar and elements for the worship service. This is some of the most sacred and holy work that is performed by lay people. The Altar Guild tradition begins in the Old Testament when God appointed certain individuals to care for the altar and the temple. Since that time, individuals have taken care of the altar and tools for each service; at Community, this work is done primarily by lay people. The Altar Guild work is mostly done "behind the scenes" and no public speaking or appearance is involved. Training is provided. This opportunity is open to confirmed members. Some Altar Guild members engage their entire family to assist them.
Usher teams are a vital part of each service. The Ushers distribute bulletins, hearing devices and any other materials or needs for services. They assist all attending services in communing, giving tithes and offerings, and with seating and comfort needs. The Ushers work in teams and typically an Usher Team ushers once a month.
Alcolytes and Crucifers are an important part of the service. Performed typically by members of our confirmation classes, the Alcoytes light the candles and assist with communion. The Crucifers are responsible for the proper care and presentation of the cross. Training is provided!
Schedulers, Trainers, and other support people are always needed to be certain that the work of the many volunteers is performed with ease. If you can organize a schedule, your skills are needed.

Community Lutheran has an active music program that is lead by
Michael Fuchs: mfuchs/ÄT/communitylutheran/DÖT/-o-r-g-/
our Director of Music.
We are also blessed with an exceptional organist,
Tordis Fahringer:
tfahringer/ÄT/communitylutheran/DÖT/-o-r-g-/
and wonderful volunteer musicians. The following musical opportunities are available for all members. The ability to read music is helpful but not necessary.
Youth Handbell Choir: Meeting on Wednesday evenings at from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, the Youth Handbell Choir prepares special music to be played during the service. Fourth grade through High School students who have played another instrument (including piano) or who read music to some extent are welcome to be part of this group.
Adult Handbell Choir: Meeting on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM, the Adult Handbell Choir prepares special music that is played during the service. The Adult Handbell Choir provides their musical offerings once a month. Adults and late teens who have some experience reading music are welcome to be a part of this group.
Chancel Choir: Meeting on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 PM, the Chancel Choir leads the services and provides special music. Adults and late teens who enjoy rich, traditional music with some "new" traditional music mixed in. Major presentations throughout the year. Ability to read music useful, but not a requirement, due to a thorough rehearsal schedule.
Beginning guitar class (both guitar and bass) meets Thursdays from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM for teens and adults who want to learn enough guitar to play praise music. If you know how to hold the instrument, this is the class for you!
Advanced guitar classes meet on Thursdays from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM. For teens and adults who want to continue learning enough guitar to play praise music.
Spirit! Instrumental Praise Band. Meets Thursdays 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM: Keyboard players, piano players, guitarists, drummers and bass players. High School students through adults. Practice songs to be used with the Spirit! choir and other praise groups in the future. Part of the purpose of this group is to develop praise bands for both adults and youth.
Spirit! meets Sundays at 12:15 PM after the second service. High School through adults (yes, even older adults!) Vocalists to present contemporary Christian music to the congregation on a regular basis. Will be backed by the Spirit! Instrumental Praise Band.
If you enjoy singing but can't practice with the Chancel Choir during the week, or if you just enjoy listening to and singing contemporary Christian music, this is the group for you. We use printed music, but the ability to read music is not necessary.

The EKM Team meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 PM at CLC. The EKM Ministry Team is responsible for the direction of the ministry. Team meetings involve planning and organizing events, activities and initiatives. Anyone with an interest in environmental concerns or issues or with the gift of planning could make an important difference to this Ministry!
Monthly workdays are scheduled on the fourth Saturday of each month from 9:00 to 12:00 to perform maintenance on the Trail, Garden, and our other environmental initiatives. The work varies month to month, depending on the season. To volunteer, you simply need to come to the church. Volunteering even just one Saturday during the year will bring beauty to the church grounds while protecting an important wildlife and watershed area! Bring your work gloves, rakes, hoes or any other gardening equipment if you have it. If you do not, bring your hands and willingness to help!
The Giving Garden is planted each spring with the help of the Sunday school classes, and harvested and watered throughout the growing season by volunteers. Time commitments for watering and harvesting the Giving Garden are minimal but the task is extremely important!
If you have questions, would like more information, or want to volunteer, please join us at any work day or email the .
Sunday School Teachers and Aides teach children about Jesus and establish a strong faith base for the future. The important work of "equipping the saints" begins at age three and continues on through adulthood. Teachers must be confirmed members. Aides are typically confirmation age or older.
Teachers' main activities are to prepare the lessons prior to Sunday morning and then present lessons on Sunday during our Learning Hour. Teachers are responsible for the careful presentation of the material and for the safety of the children and learners in their care. They manage the classroom and classroom activities. They are assisted by Teacher's Aides on Sunday morning. Multiple teachers will be assigned to each classroom so you're not alone! Substitute teachers are available if you cannot attend a Sunday Morning session.
The Sunday School Superintendent selects materials, leads workshops and training sessions and manages registration activities. The Superintendent is a resource to the teachers, aides and pastors.
Each Summer, Vacation Bible School is a week long educational event. VBS needs teachers, aides, musical assistants, photographers plus other volunteer activities. VBS volunteers need to be available during the week of VBS. (Although your assistance in preparation prior to VBS is very welcome!) Previous teaching experience is not required.
The Christian Education team uses special events to enhance the learning process. Coordinators for special events, such as The Smile Train, collecting pop tops, planting the Giving Garden and other educational events are needed.
Volunteers for Christian Education will be required to follow our Youth Protection Policy while volunteering in any Christian Education role that has direct contact with our children.

Share your talents as a baker (or a person who knows how to buy cookies!) for Fellowship Time. You can sign up for as little as one Sunday during the school year. The Fellowship Team will be standing by to assist you with set up, making coffee and getting your "goodies" ready. Look for the sign up outside of the kitchen or email the Fellowship Team.

Typically scheduled once each quarter, property work days are essential to keeping our grounds and building appropriate for worship. Volunteers meet on a Saturday morning and spend a few hours with special cleaning and general maintenance. Weekly mowing is handled by a very dedicated volunteer, Larry Wallace; but the trimming, care of the trees, outdoor lighting and other lawn needs are done at these workdays.
To participate, you only need to come to the church on work day with your gardening gloves and any gardening equipment you might have. If you don't have any gardening tools, that's okay! Just come!
Because our parking lot is used as a commuter lot during the week, VDOT is responsible for snow removal for the lot. We only need to remove snow from the walkways and handicapped parking spots. To help, bring your snow shovel and come on down to the church after a snow fall! We usually try to get any snow out of the way on Saturday or before first service on Sunday!

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to share His love throughout our community and the world. Through the work of the Social Ministry Team we are able to be the hands and arms of Jesus and reach out to those in need. You can be a part of that outreach in many ways.
We collect food twice a year to restock the LINK food pantry. Usually a bulletin announcement at church will let you know "our" month. LINK welcomes non-perishable food from Community at any time of the year. There is a box in the church narthex in which you place your food donations. They will be taken to the LINK food pantry.
The food that is collected for the LINK pantry is put into bags and distributed by LINK's member churches. CLC delivers food for a month during the year. Volunteers delivering the food pick it up, already bagged, and take it to an address provided by LINK. It can be delivered anytime during the day -- as long as it arrives at the home in time to be prepared for an evening meal. This is an opportunity for the entire family to do something meaningful together. You should plan on volunteering for a couple of hours and will need a vehicle.
Each year, thanks to the generous donation of the Crafters, CLC sponsors a house for Christmas in April. Depending upon the needs of the homeowner, the team gathers on one Saturday and paints, does repairs, and works around a home so that everyone in Loudoun County might have a liveable home. This project takes most of the day. You should be old enough to practice good safety techniques at a "construction site" to participate. The Christmas In April team is provided lunch typically donated by a local company. If you cannot spend the day with the team, providing lunch for them would be a great assistance.

The Spiritual Nurture team provides meals to our families and friends who may have someone hospitalized, have added a new member to their family by birth or adoption. You can sign up to prepare and deliver food to a member's family.
The Team also provides a meal for families after a funeral service at Community. This may be one of the difficult times in the life of this family; you would have an opportunity to provide the first step toward healing by helping with the preparation and serving at the church.
The Spiritual Nurture Team is responsible for the Prayer Chain. You can become a member of the prayer chain by sending us email. You will receive emails from time-to-time with prayer requests. You simply read the email and add those concerns to your prayers. The power of prayer is felt every single day at Community and this is one way to be part of this very important ministry.

Each month, Community Lutheran produces a newsletter which is sent to members and friends. The creation and production of the newsletter is a huge task that frequently needs helping hands. Your assistance monthly with this task is needed!
The monthly calendar with this web page is produced using a third-party program. As events are scheduled or changed, the calendar needs to be updated. The only tools needed are a computer with a web interface. Beth Johnson will train any volunteers on how to upload dates to keep our members informed. Your assistance in this task would help keep everyone informed of the many opportunities here at Community!
